Bears Without Boarders in Peru

Bridge of Hope is delighted to partner with Bears Without Borders, a US-based non-profit devoted to sending toys and childhood necessities to children worldwide. In Peru, Bears Without Boarders founders, Aviva Presser and Erez Lieberman, developed a program that whould give not just to the children, but to their communities as well. Instead of sending stuffed animals from the US, they contracted with El Mercurio(a fair trade workshop of women from Huancavelica) to produce 200 loveable llamas which Bridge of Hope then distributed at two different sites. The first site, Hogar San Francisco, is a residence for children without economic resources who need complicated surgeries and medical follow-up that can only be done in Lima. The children range from a few months to 18 years old and can be in Lima from a couple of months to a couple of years. The second site was Paz y Esperanza's Huanuco program where they work with children who have been sexually abused. They sponser week-long summer camps (Peru's summer is January and February) in which they can do more intense therapy. The first group of llamas were passed out as part of these camps and the llamas are being well loved!!

The girls and boys were thrilled with this gift and Bridge of Hope thanks Aviva and Erez for their concern for children in Peru and using a fair trade workshop to produce these gifts.

Our Beginings

Bridge of Hope started with a pilot project with a $2000 export in October 2002 for the PC(USA). In 2003 the project was formalized. With the help of PC(USA) and through the CENCA Institution, 10 artisan groups were developed throughout Peru, in Huancayo, La Oroya, Huancavelica and Lima, totaling 85 artisans.

In 2006 Partners for Just Trade was formed to promote and seek out new markets in the USA. This non-profit organization has helped increase and manage our clients in the United States.

Currently Bridge of Hope works with 225 artisans in 25 groups.
